Woman found in pool of blood in kitchen of Sha Tin flat

A 70-year-old divorcee has been arrested on suspicion of killing his former wife during  an argument at a flat  in Sha Tin.

Mui Sau-kuen, 48, died in a pool of blood with a 10cm  wound to her neck.

Police said the quarrel broke out in the flat in Luk Chuen House, Lek Yuen Estate, about 9.15am when the pair were arguing over their living arrangements after Mui obtained a divorce last month.

Police said they had been due to meet Housing Department officials at 11am. Their 15-year-old son  was at school at the time.

Senior Inspector Tso Kwok-kuen, of Sha Tin district crime squad, said Mui was attacked with a cutter and fell to the ground while shouting for help.

'A neighbour told us that the woman was found lying in a pool of blood on the ground in the kitchen and her ex-husband was standing motionless next to her,' a police source said. 'The victim was still conscious and asking her neighbour for help. The neighbour immediately  called police.'

Mui was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

'The 10cm cut was the fatal wound. She probably died from losing blood after her artery was severed,' acting Superintendent Hung Kam-wing, of the Sha Tin district crime squad, said.

Police said the man was arrested  in  the unit.  A 13cm cutter was seized at the scene.

With a  wound to his left hand and bloodstains on his trousers, the elderly man was escorted by police from the building. He was hooded and handcuffed.

He was detained at Sha Tin police station last night. No charges had been laid.

Police said an autopsy would be held today to determine the cause of death of the woman.

The couple were married on the mainland about 20 years ago. Their son, who was born on the mainland,  moved to Hong Kong 10 years ago. After the move,  the boy had lived with his father.

Mui, who worked as a waitress in a Sha Tin restaurant, came to the city to join the family about six years ago.

'More than a year ago, the couple's relationship turned sour and the woman applied for a divorce. She obtained a divorce last month,' Senior Inspector Tso said.

The Housing Department said the couple had inquired about their housing arrangements if they divorced, but  had not applied for new housing.

According to the  department, households are not entitled to extra public housing assistance because of divorce.

The elderly man received an old-aged allowance of $625 a month, but the family did not seek other help from the Social Welfare Department.

The department said social workers would follow the case and offer assistance to the family.

'We will check whether their relatives can take care of their son or the department will arrange residential services for the boy,' a spokeswoman said.
