The Beautiful South have recently released Superbi, their 11th album in a 17-year career. Their latest effort is quite different to their previous releases, but the sound is still recognisably theirs. Most of the 12 tracks are country influenced and the mood throughout the album is generally upbeat, with the banjo and steel guitar of The Rose of my Cologne making this song a pleasant opener. The first single Manchester is a classic example of Paul Heaton's simple but very effective use of lyrics: 'If rain makes Britain great, then Manchester is greater...What makes Britain great, makes Manchester yet greater.' The Cat Loves the Mouse has a bittersweet edge that makes it all the more intriguing, while When Romance is Dead and Meanwhile hone in on the essence of relationships - joy, heartache and all the points in between. This is the group from Hull's third album featuring vocalist Alison Wheeler, and her bandmates have made optimum use of her strong and sultry voice. Even if you aren't a fan of The Beautiful South, you will find Superbi a pleasant album to listen to while relaxing at the weekend.
