FAST-RISING board-sailor Anthony Lau Chun-ho staged a remarkable comeback on the second day of the sixth and final leg in the Mobil Hong Kong Windsurfing Circuit to clinch third place overall in the domestic series.
The 19-year-old was virtually out of contention after the first three races at Tai Tam Bay in Stanley, but bounced back with a win and a second to place behind Chan Kwok-hung in the two-day regatta.
Although he failed to win any leg of the six-stage series, Lau performed steadily throughout the year to finish third overall behind Hong Kong internationals Sam Wong Tak-sum and Lee Lai-shan.
Wong is the 1992 Asian champion and the runner-up this year, while Lee is undisputedly the best woman sailor in the world, having just completed a clean-sweep of the World, European and Asian titles. Both are full-time athletes who train and compete overseas for nine months of the year.
Lau, who studies at the Cheng Chik Chee College in Sai Kung, will take on Wong and Lee again this weekend in the international, star-studded Mobil Hong Kong Open Championship.
Meanwhile, Tai Kwan School's 15-year-old Cheng Hing-lun dominated the territory's young sailors, winning his category with an unblemished record.
