Latest in Mission Impossible series to be shown on mainland
An edited version of the latest Mission Impossible film will hit mainland movie screens next month minus several scenes after Shanghai officials complained that the film cast the city in an unfavourable light.
Mainland media reported at the weekend that M:i:III would premiere on July 20, with an official of the distribution arm of the China Film Group Corp quoted as saying: 'It's sure that the movie has been somewhat cut.' No details were given.
Part of the movie was filmed in Shanghai. Officials were reportedly unhappy about scenes showing laundry hanging outside on bamboo poles and a slow response by Shanghai police during a high-speed chase through the city's streets.
It was reported last month that the movie's United States interests would have to agree to the changes before mainland audiences could legally view the film, which they appear to have done.
Local media had even speculated that the movie might be banned entirely. The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television had made recommendations to the distributor for changes.
