Thais have found dozens of ways to celebrate their king's 60th year on the throne - from freeing prisoners to printing a 60-baht banknote to taking steps to save an endangered river fish.

It may be one of the biggest royal events in decades, with monarchs, princes and princesses from 25 nations attending, but the ceremonies have also involved most of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 63 million subjects. Thailand has been awash in yellow, the colour associated with Monday, the day of the week the king was born in 1927, with many people wearing yellow shirts or wristbands that say, 'We love the king'.

Across the nation, Buddhist temples, shops and public buildings are flying yellow flags bearing the royal insignia, and companies and embassies have taken out full-page newspaper advertisements to congratulate him.

In provinces and cities, Thais have held concerts and exhibitions, planted trees and released fish into communal ponds.

Commemorative coins and stamps have been printed, and the Bank of Thailand issued 9,999,999 banknotes with a face value of 60 baht ($12) that were snapped up within hours on Friday.

Each note was sold for 100 baht, with the difference donated to the many royal charitable projects that have added to the king's popularity. More will be printed this month to meet the demand.
