City's suspected first human case brings HK warning to cross-border travellers

Shenzhen authorities fear the border city has its first human bird-flu case - a 31-year-old man who was last night critically ill in hospital with an H5 strain of flu.

Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection announced the development last night, after being notified by the Guangdong Health Department and the Ministry of Health in Beijing.

Close contacts of the patient were found to be healthy, the Hong Kong centre was told.

'Even though Hong Kong has been free from human avian influenza cases since early 2003, members of the public should be vigilant given the large volume of population flow between Guangdong and Hong Kong,' the centre said.

The Guangdong provincial information office named the patient as Jiang O and said he was a truck driver for a company in the city's Longgang district.
