What is it? A facial from Italian brand Olos, which makes the Anima di Vulcano by Territoria range of skincare products. It uses minerals from volcanic material, saying they can improve the skin's appearance and reduce signs of ageing. What about the treatment? It starts with the usual cleansing and toning routine, but there's no fiddling about with aromatherapy oils and questions about which one you like best. Then the therapist uses different-sized lava stones (said to be from Italy's active volcano Etna) to do the facial massage and exfoliation. And it really does exfoliate. They can be used as a stand-in pumice stone. It didn't hurt, but you're left with a feeling that all possible dead skin has been sloughed off. From an anti-ageing perspective, this is good news. The smaller stones are used around the eyes and lips, and the larger ones on the chin and forehead. The therapist also massages your hands with a lotion that contains magnesium salts and malachite, which is said to be a precious antioxidant. Was it relaxing? Yes, but those who prefer a hands-on approach to facials may not like the stones. Still, Olos says the facial helps rid the skin of impurities and toxins. And the smooth black stones certainly get the product into your skin. The company says the lava stones used to be thought to contain 'magic powers' that could neutralise negativity and help restore overall harmony. What about the range? The Anima di Vulcano range by Territoria contains malachite - rich in copper, which helps to stimulate the cells from the deepest layers of the epidermis - rhodolite, a rare stone rich in manganese that helps delay the ageing process, pink clay in the cleansing mud to cleanse and purify, magnesium salts in the toning lotion and hand cream, silicium in the lip and eye contour renewal serum, and potassium salts in the mask and night cream. Olos says that, during a 30-day test, 63 per cent of women who used Anima di Vulcano products daily noticed a visible reduction in wrinkles. How much are the products? The Cleansing Mud is $300/300ml, the Restorative Day Cream is $600/50ml, the Restructuring Lip and Eye Contour Cream goes for $575/30ml, and the Remineralising Hand Cream is $325/150ml.
