The Feeling

Twelve Stops and Home

(Universal)

If you like your pop light and fluffy, look no further. This band of young things from Sussex and London play a brand of music channelled through the likes of Supertramp and the Tubes, complete with driving melodies and nudge-nudge lyrics that will make the teenies twitter.

But what the lads do, they do well. And while the cynics will be listening as their teeth grind, you can be sure Twelve Stops and Home will shift mega numbers.

The brains behind it is Dan Gillespie Sells, responsible for words and music, who puts the Carpenters down as a major influence. Brave young fellow.

And those sort of pop sensibilities are on stark display in the two singles to have found chart success on their home patch.

The Sewn - a gently layered and instantly forgettable ballad - and Fill My Little World, which never gets deeper than 'Show some love/ You ain't so tough'. They are among the better, but not the best tracks on show.

Leave that to the irresistible power balled Rose, complete with its slow-slow, fast-fast ending, and the scorching Same Old Stuff, which boasts the kind of lead break that used to help those 1970s flares to fly.

The closer, Blue Piccadilly, swirls around, echoing, and even a little bit of Queen. The Feeling don't pretend to hide their influences.

And while the cloying lyrics might make you cringe, there's an innocent enthusiasm about these chaps that makes the highlights of Twelve Stops and Home stick around in your head.

On the plus side, The Feeling come across as bright young things who have somehow escaped the deathknell of over-marketing or studio interference (alas, poor McFly).

You might not like it that they do, but chances are you won't have much choice in the matter.
