With the globe gripped by World Cup football, the international conservation organisation World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) says it's time people started paying the same attention to the world they live in.

The organisation says that people's polluting habits are like own goals in football matches, which destroy not just the individual, or a team, but an entire nation.

In response, the WWF has listed five of man's worst environmental own goals on its international website (www.panda.org).

A red card is featured along with the list warning people how serious the problems are.

In the same way television stations usually compile lists of a tournament's greatest goals and worst moments, the WWF has done the same.

'We thought we would do our own compilation and put together five of the greatest environmental own goals: the things we have done as a human race over the centuries that has seen us make some incredibly stupid choices and make a real mess of planet,' the WWF says on its website.

Global warming is top of the list. The WWF warns that global warming could fundamentally alter one-third of plant and animal habitats by the end of this century.
