TWO mainlanders arrested in connection with the largest one-day haul of smuggled frozen pork, valued at $420,000, received three-month jail sentences in Eastern Court yesterday.
In separate cases, Ng Hi, a 39-year-old purser, and Chan Hing, a 27-year-old seaman, admitted two counts of importing unmanifested cargo and importing reserved commodities without a licence on December 8.
Customs officers, acting on a tip-off, raided the Chinese vessel Wai Shui Chu at Quarry Bay Public Cargo working area and arrested Ng.
Some 40,000 kilograms of frozen pork, worth $250,000, was found inside the cargo hold of the vessel.
In a second case, the court heard that Chan, who was arrested in another raid, was responsible for the cargo's documentation.
Under caution, Chan admitted that he was instructed by his company to send the meat from Wai Tung to Hong Kong.
