EVERYONE WANTS to look his and her best on their big day, but how do you choose the right person to capture this very special occasion, one of the most memorable in your life?

For most of us, this is the most photographed day of our lives. The wedding photographs are as essential to the day as the cake and the bridal gown. This makes wedding photography a multimillion-dollar industry, in which a photographer's services can sometimes cost the earth.

Choosing a photographer who can sensitively capture the event in a style and manner to your liking is like trying to find the right bottle of wine - there are photographers to match all budgets and preferences. Their rates range from $3,000 a day to a heart-stopping $50,000 for a day's work (excluding printing costs).

So where does one start? Begin by setting up appointments and interviewing the photographers. It is important to have a rapport with them. You should be able to get a feel for what they are like as people. Are they creative, observant, conscientious, detail-oriented?

Money is the other big factor. Ask yourself how much you are comfortable with spending, and if you can squeeze out an extra 10 per cent, go for it. It is your wedding, and you should be able to choose the photographer who impresses you most.
