Childhood dreams aside, a wedding dress should flatter your body shape and suit the venue

FOR SOME WOMEN, their wedding day has been formulating in their heads since they were little girls. They may have dressed up their dolls, they probably dressed up in their mother's clothes and they almost certainly played at being bride and groom with their friends.

So, by the time they have a real wedding to look forward to, they usually have a strong idea about what dress they want to wear - it could be a traditional Chinese bridal dress, an ethereal dress with light flowing layers, or a Cinderella-style gown of puff-ball proportions.

Before brides-to-be get carried away with their childhood fantasies and place an order for a dress that would look more at home in a fairy tale, there are some points to think about.

Crucially, the style of a dress should reflect the venue. Designer Barney Cheng said brides often wanted a princess gown even when vows were being exchanged at a registry office. But that style of gown was not appropriate as there was no ceremony.

'For a civil wedding, I would suggest go for a chic, streamlined and sophisticated dress rather than a fairy tale gown. The Hong Kong mindset is that a bride needs a big gown. If it's a church wedding then go for a full blown train, but if not, keep it chic.'
