TWO of China's top dissidents, who last saw each other in Tiananmen Square, have had a reunion in Hong Kong.

Former student leader Wu'erkaixi met exiled labour activist Han Dongfang during a brief visit to the territory last week. It is understood Mr Wu'erkaixi stayed at least one night at the $2,450-a-night Peninsula hotel.

According to Mr Han, who spent yesterday campaigning for international human rights at Star Ferry, it was the first time he had formally met Mr Wu'erkaixi. He said they had lunch and spoke about their lives.

Mr Wu'erkaixi has acquired a playboy image since fleeing China in late 1989 and local pro-democracy campaigner Choi Yiu-cheong, also present at the meeting, said Mr Han spoke of some of the stories circulating about the former student leader.

Mr Wu'erkaixi told Mr Han to believe the good things he had heard, not the bad, Mr Choi said.

Legislator Lau Chin-shek said Mr Wu'erkaixi arrived early last week from Singapore and left for Taiwan on Thursday night. He declined to reveal the purpose of the trip.
