MAINLAND manufacturers' keenness to obtain the ISO 9000 certification is attracting an increasing number of quality consultancies to China. ISOtec (Hong Kong), which claims to be the only management consultancy in the territory with an ISO 9000 accreditation, is among those joining the rush into the China market. Director Denise Chambre said an increasing number of mainland companies, including state enterprises, wanted to get ISO certification to win access to international markets. Mainland companies planning to adopt ISO 9000 systems were mainly in the manufacturing sector, in contrast to Hong Kong where there was a tendency for the service sector to adopt the standards, she said. ''[In Hong Kong] a lot of our new clients are in the service industry,'' said Ms Chambre, citing those in transport, banking and retailing industries. ''Traditionally, ISO 9000 was mainly applicable to manufacturing companies. However, it is increasingly being applied by the service industry,'' she said. The consultancy was awarded an ISO 9000 qualification from the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency last month. Ms Chambre said it was important for a quality consultancy to adopt the ISO systems itself. ''We do practise for what we preach,'' she said. ''Earning this award has provided us with an even greater appreciation of the benefits that a well-designed and implemented quality system can bring to service companies.''
