mergers in first half reach US$227 trillion
Information technology mergers and acquisitions hit a four-year high of about US$227 trillion in the first six months of the year, led by a surge in telecommunications deals, a report said.
First-half merger spending grew 50 per cent year on year while the 1,868 announced transactions marked a 35 per cent increase, analyst firm The 451 Group said.
Companies spent about US$106 billion in 977 deals in the second quarter, compared with US$121 billion and 891 transactions in the first quarter. The first-half totals marked the highest level of both spending and deal announcements since the consultancy began tracking IT-related mergers in 2002.
Telecommunications consolidation accounted for 75 per cent of M&A spending in the first half, and for 23 of the US$29 billion-plus deals announced.
