Viewing terrace has 360-degree views and restaurants added

The Peak Tower is soon to dismantle its scaffolding to show off a diverse range of restaurants and shops, and an expanded viewing gallery.

The $100 million facelift that began in April last year was aimed at repositioning the iconic landmark as a weekend hangout for local residents, a shop-and-dine destination for tourists and a new venue for wedding and rooftop parties.

The viewing gallery on level five has been moved 30 metres higher to the rooftop on level eight, where a 686 square metre terrace will be open to the public for the first time, with a 360-degree panorama of the city.

Martyn Sawyer, group general manager of properties and clubs for Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, the owners of the Peak Tower, said the first shop would reopen in the middle of this month, followed by restaurants and food outlets in September. A formal relaunch of the building is scheduled for mid-November.

'We would like the Peak Tower to be a place for everyone and hope tourist visitors will stay for at least a couple of hours,' he said yesterday. He said about 7 million visitors toured The Peak last year for an average of 45 minutes each and that 4.1 million went by tram.
