About 100 students have been isolated after an influenza outbreak hit a university in Nanchang , Jiangxi province, this week, prompting many other students to flee.
The first cases of the flu emerged several days ago at Nanchang University's medical school on its Qianhu campus, the university said. The outbreak was caused by a common type of Influenza A virus, and bird flu and Sars had been ruled out.
The department said the students were in stable condition and nobody was seriously ill.
Isolating the students was just one measure adopted by the university to contain the outbreak, the department said.
'Around 100 students have been isolated in the campus hospital in the past few days, but some were released after their temperatures fell to normal levels,' a staff member said, adding the university had disinfected classrooms and student residences over the past two days. Thermometers and the antiviral Amantadine had also been delivered to each student's room.
But the measures did not ease concerns among students, many of whom fled the campus yesterday morning worried there was a Sars or bird flu epidemic.
