An electrician paralysed in an accident at a Central building site six years ago yesterday got his total compensation award of $13.8 million.
Yip Suen-pun had sued seven companies over the accident, which occurred on November 18, 2000.
The Court of First Instance heard he was working on the wiring of a podium on a Caine Road construction site when a rubbish chute collapsed from the 12th floor.
Mr Yip, who was 31 at the time, was buried by falling debris. He was pulled unconscious from the rubble by emergency services.
He suffered multiple fractures of the spine, broken ribs, arms and legs, a punctured lung and a cut above his left eye. The injuries have left him paralysed from the waist down and he suffers from back pain, hand weakness, numbness, incontinence, impotence, blurred vision and nerve damage.
Six of the seven firms - C & K Engineering, Yu Wing Construction and Investment, Pacific Jumbo Development, Rich Line Enterprises, Kinsan Development and Henderson Real Estate Agency - settled with him for $10.75 million.
