Typhoon Ewiniar, the third typhoon to hit the mainland this year, battered coastal regions near Shanghai yesterday, bringing heavy rainstorms to the city, and the coastlines of Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.

The typhoon was 560km southeast of Shanghai at 8am yesterday morning, according to China News Service. Wind speed at the centre of the typhoon reached Level 13, or 40 metres per second.

Experts said the storm would move northward at a speed of 25 km/h to 30 km/h along the eastern coastline and would arrive in the south of the Yellow Sea today, with wind speeds diminishing.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected along the central and northern coastlines of Zhejiang province, Shanghai and Jiangsu province. More than 7,600 people had been evacuated from their homes near Ningbo city in Zhejiang by 6 pm on Saturday, Xinhua said.

The Ningbo marine bureau announced that the city's harbour had entered into conditions for a Level 3 precautionary warning and requested ship handlers to prepare for the storm. More than 4,000 vessels moved into the harbour's typhoon shelter.

There were also evacuations in other coastal cities of the province, according to officials.
