EU anti-dumping threat scares furniture makers

Updated at 6.27pm: Hong Kong furniture makers are concerned that the European furniture industry might soon lodge a complaint with the European Commission (EC) ? and request anti-dumping measures against furniture products originating in the mainland.

European furniture manufacturers have been voicing concern about the dumping of mainland-origin upholstered sofas and other types of chairs onto the European Union market.

A briefing for the Hong Kong furniture sector was held on Thursday to explain the EU?s anti-dumping rules and procedures.

Anti-dumping action uses international trade law to counter ?dumping? ? which occurs when manufacturers in one country export their products to another country at unfairly low prices. This often undercuts the local producers.

A spokesman for the Trade and Industry Department said: ?Dumping in the EU market is derived from the import of mainland-origin upholstered sofas and other types of chairs.

?The industry requests the initiation of anti-dumping proceeding against those imports.? he said
