IN AN ERA OF globalisation, it is important for a cosmopolitan city such as Hong Kong to forge ties with governments, businesses and educational institutions in the region and beyond.

Its efforts to do so were given a boost when it signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Education Co-operation with Britain in May.

The memorandum was signed by British Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, Bill Rammell, and Hong Kong Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur Li Kwok-cheung.

It recognises the growing collaboration between Hong Kong and Britain in education and aims to strengthen the partnership.

Professor Li said: 'The memorandum represents the earnest efforts of both sides towards the objective of strengthening education co-operation. It will lay a solid foundation for further collaboration and exchanges between the institutions and students of the two places.'

Ruth Gee, director of the British Council, said it was confident the words would be translated into action to benefit students, staff and the communities.

'In this global economy, we are all global citizens and internationalisation is a word to which Hong Kong and the UK attach great value,' Ms Gee said.
