With no energy left for exercise after work, and lured by adverts for slimming belts, I parted with $1,600 to see if they were effective. The result: I think it is time I found the time and energy to visit the gym.

A myth surrounding these belts spread across town at the start of the year. Two months ago, out of curiosity, I visited a health product shop and tried out a belt, later deciding to take it home.

Settling down on the couch, I wrapped it around my waist. I switched it on and the belt began to shake harder and harder. But all I could feel was a horrible itchiness across my belly. The sales agent later told me this was a normal reaction. Finally, I was forced to remove the belt before the suggested 20-minute session ended.

I refused to give up, though. Having parted with $1,600, I tried to continue using the belt but failed to see any improvement. It left me itchy and with an urge to run to the toilet after use.

It was disappointing, but I don't regret spending the money. The belt turned out to be a good massage device for a sore back thanks to my high heels - another inescapable beauty trap.
