Yes, it is true. There are aspects of Hong Kong history that have become so well known that everybody believes they know the story.
If only that story were true. But then again, it is such a fun story, should we let the truth get in the way?
So, what's the story then?
Well, every day in Causeway Bay you can hear a cannon go off at noon, known as the 'noon-day gun'. That still happens today and is fun to watch, if, very loud.
The reason that it is there today - according to myth - is that the gun was sometimes used by its owners, the company Jardine Matheson, back in the middle of the 19th century to welcome back the opium fleet, or to greet the arriving Jardine Matheson taipan and apparently this offended the British navy admiral based in Hong Kong at the time.
