There is so much more to anime than Hayao Miyazaki. This year's Anime & Fantasy - a film festival from July 27 to August 6 - features some of the best Japanese animations and fantasy films in recent years.
Presented by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, the mini-festival will showcase 14 anime programmes from various genres.
'The previous generation grew up watching American comics and animations. But our generation is exposed to Japanese culture,' said Beatrice Chan, HKIFF programme manager. 'Whenever we turn on the TV it's showing Japanese cartoons, and wherever we go we are surrounded by Japanese goods.'
The films to be screened will give the audience a good introduction to the major genres and their history.
Among them are giant monster movies which feature the legendary dinosaur-like Godzilla, known as the mother of all Japanese monsters, and Gamera, a gigantic flying turtle that befriends children.
The recent adventures of these screen monsters can also be seen, including Gamera the Brave (2006) and Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).
