THE UNIVERSITY OF Newcastle has conferred industrialist Roy Chung Chi-ping a Doctor of the University honoris causa in recognition of his contribution to the industrial development of Hong Kong.

In the citation, the university's vice-chancellor and president Nicholas Saunders said: 'Mr Chung is a well-respected and dynamic industrialist and had earned great acclaim for his invaluable contributions to the industrial sector in Hong Kong.

'His tireless dedication to promoting the advanced 3D CAD/CAM popularisation programme to enhance the competitiveness of the industry is just one of the good examples,' he said.

Mr Chung, co-founder and group managing director of Techtronic Industries (TTI), began his career as a warehouse keeper for which he earned just $280 a month.

'Because I didn't finish high school [due to the family move from Macau to Hong Kong], I had to take on jobs that the more educated wouldn't take, like warehouse keeper, and put in more hard work to make up for the lack of qualifications,' he said.

After toiling for 17 years in various positions with various companies, he teamed up with a German business contact, Horst Pudwill, to set up Techtronic.
