THE DEAL BREAKERS

Emmanuelle Beart is not the only celebrity to have lost an advertising contract because of off-screen antics - although not everyone was sacked for taking part in demonstrations.

Isabella Rossellini

For the publicity team at cosmetic giants Lancome, the decision to replace Rossellini as the brand's public face seemed simple: having just turned 40, Rossellini was deemed to be too old. But the decision attracted plenty of press, triggering a debate about the artifice of modern beauty, and the age discrimination in show business and its negative effect on young women. For Rossellini, it was a blessing in disguise. No longer typecast as a siren, her acting career blossomed. She has since starred in Peter Greenaway's Tulse Luper trilogy and plays a doctor on TV series Chicago Hope. Her latest role is in the film adaptation of Mario Vargas Llosa's The Feast of the Goat, as an exiled academic returning home to face the horrors she went through at the hands of former Dominican Republic despot Rafael Trujillo.

Helena Bonham Carter

Well-known for her independent, feminist streak - she was playing hideously made-up characters years before Charlize Theron - Bonham Carter's proclamation in 1993 that she doesn't like wearing make-up came as no surprise. However, it's hardly the thing to say when you've just signed up to be the so-called face for a cosmetics company. British perfume-makers Yardley were not amused, and she was replaced by Linda Evangelista when her contract ended in 1997.
