A cute and thrilling ride

Most of us wouldn't describe racing cars as cute. But John Lasseter and Joe Lanft, directors of the much anticipated Pixar cartoon, Cars, have created a funny, heartwarming story about a rookie hotrod who finds the value of friendship.

Lightning McQueen is a race car with his heart set on winning the Piston Cup - and the fame, groupies and wealth that comes with it. But en route to California to take part in the race, McQueen finds himself stuck in the forgotten town of Radiator Springs.

The mayor orders McQueen to repair the roads he destroyed when he entered the town at top speed. He has no choice but to stay in Radiator Springs until all the roads are paved again. It is during this forced visit that that McQueen finds love, loyalty and friendship.

The computer animation is outstanding, and even though the vehicles sport eyes and mouths, they are convincing. The landscape looks so realistic it could have been filmed in a real-life American town instead of being computer generated. Even the trees and rocks seem real.

The flawless animation is complemented by lively voice-overs that bring the cars to life.

The movie is a little too long and the plot predictable, but the colourful graphics and clever jokes keep you fixed on the screen.

You don't need to be an avid Formula One fan or even like cars to enjoy this movie. Just buckle up in your theatre seat and get ready for a thrilling ride.

Movie tip: Stay until all the credits have rolled or you will miss out on some laughs.
