Support from SoulTalk enabled Cara (not her real name) to turn her life around after 25 years of marriage to an abusive, alcoholic husband.
Despite years of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, she stayed because without a job or money, she felt unable to support their daughter if she left.
As a battered wife, she attended group sessions at SoulTalk, working up the courage to study and take a part-time job behind her husband' back.
When their only child was 12, her husband left, clearing out the joint bank account. He called their daughter, warning her not to tell Cara where he was.
'She didn't know how to handle this. She had a breakdown,' Cara said.
'He took all our money. At the age of 52, I found myself having to go out and find a job.' Eventually she was working three part-time jobs to pay the rent and her daughter's medical bills and college.
