Police used a truck to smuggle more than 20 officers into a wholesale fruit market yesterday in Yau Ma Tei to crack down on a gambling den controlled by triads.
The Trojan Horse tactic was used to dodge six lookouts guarding three entrances to the fruit market in Reclamation Street, according to Senior Inspector Tsue Chun-tung of the anti-triad unit of Tsim Sha Tsui police station.
After a month-long surveillance and investigation of the gambling den, allegedly controlled by a 14K triad gang, more than 70 officers went into action.
Police hid in the cargo compartment of the truck, which was disguised as a fruit-delivery vehicle, Senior Inspector Tsue said. Fifty other policemen were in position outside.
He said about 90 seconds after driving into the market, the truck pulled over just in front of the gambling den in the centre of the market.
'Several men ran away when our officers jumped out from the lorry,' he said.
'After a brief chase, police intercepted and apprehended them.'
