Young, gifted and highly paid, but Tsang's star is nowhere to be seen

Wanted: Gary Chan Hak-kan. Can anyone tell us what the young star from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, special assistant to Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, is up to nowadays?

Seen as a showcase of Mr Tsang's bid to groom young talent, Mr Chan, 30, who earns $77,000 a month, has been largely invisible since his appointment in February.

There was no sign of him in the news programme on Mr Tsang broadcast by ATV on Tuesday, for instance. The hour-long programme supposedly captured Mr Tsang's typical working day, which saw him meeting overseas visitors, cabinet members, close aides and going on walkabouts.

Mr Chan was similarly invisible during a recent meeting between Mr Tsang and political parties, but the reason for that may not be such a mystery.

At an earlier, similar session, one legislator is said to have asked Mr Tsang: 'How can you make sure he won't tell his party what we discussed?'

Since then, Mr Chan no longer attends his boss' sessions with political parties.
