Movies are more than just entertainment and a way to relax, according to a group of gifted secondary school students who took a course at the Hong Kong Baptist University's department of English language and literature.
The Film Art and Culture course, which ran from July 15 to 24 at the university, comprised five four-hour lessons.
It was commissioned by the Education and Manpower Bureau as part of its Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.
Forty gifted students in Forms Three to Seven were chosen to take part.
During the lessons, the students watched a movie and discussed its plot, storytelling techniques, characters and themes.
The four films selected were Big Fish (2003), Some Like It Hot (1959), The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).
Activities such as role play were used to help students to step into the shoes of the characters and understand how their minds worked.
