Law enforcement agencies' new snooping powers have led to an increase in demand for counter-surveillance services provided by security companies.
'We've seen a 30 to 35 per cent increase since March [when Legco began debating the covert surveillance bill] in inquiries about the services we offer,' said Philip Curlewis, Asia director of Abate Risk, which conducts sweeps for surveillance equipment.
But he said he had warned many firms that bug sweeping could lead to a false sense of security.
'Ten minutes after we leave, a cleaner could come in and plant something. It all depends on access control.'
