Daniel Heung should resign from civic positions after land misuse row, critics say
Pressure mounted yesterday for architect and rural leader Daniel Heung Cheuk-kei to quit his public posts, including the chairmanship of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, because of the controversy over his alleged misuse of government land.
A fellow core member of the Heung Yee Kuk, Daniel Lam Wai-keung, said the creditability of Mr Heung - a cousin of Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen - had been destroyed by his 'improper' behaviour.
Democratic Party chairman Lee Wing-tat meanwhile demanded an urgent meeting of the Legislative Council planning, lands and works panel, chaired by kuk chairman Lau Wong-fat, to discuss whether the Lands Department made mistakes in handling the matter.
The calls came as a source close to the case said Mr Heung was in Shenzhen contemplating whether he should quit the civic education post because of the row over his use of a warehouse in Kwun Yam Shan village for residential use.
The source also confirmed that Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho Chi-ping had expressed the government's concern about Mr Heung's case to Mr Heung via Mr Lau. The administration held the view that Mr Heung's resignation would be a 'best outcome'.
