THE 40th anniversary speech day of Ho Tung Technical School for Girls held recently witnessed a re-affirmation of the school's commitment to producing well-balanced students. Principal Miss K.S. Lo highlighted the school's participation in the second phase of the School Management Initiative, the establishment of the student union and Parent-Teacher Association, and the Open Day which marked the beginning of the 40th anniversary celebrations. Professor Chiang Lan-hung, who holds the Chair of the Department of Geography at the National Taiwan University and is a former graduate of Ho Tung, presented prizes and certificates to those who had completed their secondary education. Three teachers and four staff members also received long service awards. Prof Chiang expressed her gratitude to the alma mater. The motto ''Justice and Truth'' still had a great influence on her life, she said. She stressed the importance of education. ''If you get an education, you will never lose it. No one will be able to rob you of what you have learned.'' As one of many female intellectuals who advocate women's rights, Prof Chiang pointed out that young women should be aware of their rights so that they would not be victimised by discrimination against women.
