VISITORS AT this year's Food Expo at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre can sample the flavours of 20countries and regions from Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East without a plane ticket.
The expo is being held from today in Halls 1 and 2 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Seven products zones have been set up in Hall 1 and Hall 2 features the international exhibitors.
The mainland, South Korea, Japan, Italy and Vietnam have their own pavilions. Kawan, an exhibiting company specialised in Malaysian food items, offers Veat, a line of meat substitute products made from soy protein. All the products are halal. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, soy protein reduces the risk of heart disease and cholesterol levels.
VEAT products come in 300 gram packs and three flavours - chicken chunks, satay chicken and pandan chicken - and can be used in various Malay-style recipes, including stir-fried dishes, casseroles, stews, pies, salads and soups.
Thai food is popular all over the world and Hong Kong agent Chewy International Foods believes its products will do well at the expo. It is introducing the Chewy Thai rice vermicelli line of instant food products. Made in Thailand, they come in three flavours - tom yum shrimp, minced pork with garlic and tom klong smoked fish.
Indian curry is another globally popular food, and Eastern Zone is showcasing a new range of ready-to-eat products called MTR Instant Curry. Containing no preservatives, these products are reportedly a top seller in India.
