Parents and schools should take responsibility to raise children's awareness of nature. I'm surprised that some adults do not know where rice and water come from. It shows that parents do not have a proper understanding of nature. They can take part in voluntary activities, such as tree planting and beach clean-ups, with their children. Schools should teach students about conservation and organise green activities. It is the government's duty to support environmental initiatives launched by schools. A joint effort is needed to improve Hong Kong's environment. EDWIN POON Methodist College Thanks for your letter, Edwin. One of the drawbacks of city living is that we become so detached from nature that even the most natural things seem strange - and sometimes frightening. The country parks are free and open to everyone, so why not take the opportunity that the summer holiday provides to explore them? One of my favourite walks is through Sai Kung's country park, and you can finish up your walk with a dip in the sea to cool down. Sit on the beach, dig your feet into the sand and watch the crabs scuttle about in the sand. You will get hot, sweaty and dirty, but that's all part of enjoying the great outdoors. Kate, Editor
