Halfway between hotel and exhibition

The Hotel of Modern Art is a real find for anyone with even a slight interest in art. Halfway between Yangshuo and Guilin in Guangxi province, it is also a great place for anyone who craves the countryside. Hotel guests are invited to explore the art of Yuzi Paradise, which they can do at their own pace and with their own choice of transport, whether it be walking, cycling or riding in a golf buggy. The sculpture and art galleries may inspire guests to take part in Yuzi's iArt programme and discover the artist that Yuzi founder, tycoon Rhy Chang Tsao, believes lies within all of us.

The hotel also organises day trips to Guilin, a Li River cruise and biking trips around Yangshuo. After a day out, guests return to a property that is something between an art gallery and a boutique hotel.

The sloping roof gives a different slant to each of the 76 guest rooms in the main building. The design is simple, with light woods, light fabrics and a splash of colour in the retro seating.

However, it is through prints, photographs and intriguing installations in the public areas that the art starts to have an impact.

Art and design is integrated into almost every aspect of the hotel. Most of the furniture, ceramics, cutlery and light fittings were made at the Yuzi atelier.

The hotel's second building had a soft opening recently. It adds to the complex another 124 rooms, a spa and the Twin Pigs Asian Fusion restaurant, which serves some of the county's best food. www.yuzi- paradise.com.
