Legislator wants probe into Lands Department's handling of Daniel Heung's case
The Lands Department faces another investigation over the way it handled Daniel Heung Cheuk-kei's alleged misuse of government land, after a political group filed a complaint to the Ombudsman yesterday.
April Fifth Action group legislator Leung Kwok-hung filed the complaint urging the Ombudsman to investigate the case.
'Mr Heung is a cousin of Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen. We hope the Ombudsman will act with no fear,' he said.
Mr Leung said an ordinary citizen would face eviction if found to have inappropriately used government land. He questioned why the Lands Department allowed Mr Heung to misuse the land, despite learning of irregularities in 1990.
The Legislative Council's panel on planning, lands and works has decided to hold a special meeting on September 20 to look into the case. The Audit Commission has also opened a file on the issue.
Mr Heung, an architect and rural leader who lived on the piece of land at Kwun Yam Shan, Sha Tin, between 1983 and 1999 after turning a warehouse into a luxury residence, voluntarily terminated his tenancy with the government last week in the face of mounting public pressure.
