The Planning Department is likely to improve proposals for the development of the former airport site at Kai Tak, especially in regard to connecting the new development with the surrounding old districts.

With the third consultation stage due to end on Wednesday, Chan Wai-kwan, the chairman of the subcommittee on the Southeast Kowloon Development Review, said public opinion was already firmly in favour of the site housing a cruise terminal, a multi-purpose stadium complex and a medium-density residential development.

He said he was confident the department would be looking closely at ways of knitting the new development with the existing neighbourhoods.

'I'm sure they will address the issue of connectivity as it dominates all public reaction,' he said.

The subcommittee and the Planning Department, which launched the latest Kai Tak plan two months ago, have received 70 submissions on the project.

It is the third time people have been able to air their views on the future of the old airport site. The department is due to come up with an amended outline zoning plan in a month's time. The public will be asked to comment on the amended plan before it is reviewed by the Town Planning Board.
