If you like Japanese animation then you'll know Yoshitaka Amano. The cult illustrator behind G-Force (Gachaman), Vampire Hunter D and video game Final Fantasy has been elevated to the status of serious artist. In town for an exhibition at Festival Walk as well as a Chivas-sponsored cocktail party at the Kee Club, Amano-san charmed his fans. However, this wasn't his only visit to Hong Kong this summer. Apparently, all new acrylic on aluminium works were created in town in the first two weeks of last month. According to Art Statements Gallery director Dominique Perregaux, 'the Swire group put him up at the Novotel Citygate [in Tung Chung] and created a basement studio basically in the parking lot for him to work. As you know, artists can be inspired any time of the day, so there he could work around the clock'. You can see the results now at the Kowloon Tong mall, and more works from September 5 at Art Statements Gallery in Central.
