Donald Tsang Yam-kuen was yesterday accused of distancing himself from political controversies while taking advantage of other incidents to boost his popularity.
Civic Party legislator Mandy Tam Heung-man said the chief executive still owed the public a clarification of his role in the land scandal surrounding his cousin, Daniel Heung Cheuk-kei.
She also said Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen had been left as the lone voice to promote the unpopular goods and services tax (GST) proposal.
While she said Mr Tsang apparently shied away from speaking on the two issues, he had moved swiftly to condemn this month's attack on tombstones at Gallant Garden, where civil servants who die in the line of duty are buried.
Ms Tam, lawmaker for the accountancy functional constituency, was speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, in which she directly addressed Mr Tsang.
She asked: 'Do you mean the Gallant Garden incident is more important than Mr Heung's controversy and the GST? Are you weighing issues from a public relations angle and decide that issues beneficial to your popularity rating should always have priority?'
