There's a lot more to horses than racing and gambling, according to Bee Chan Sai-kin, senior riding instructor at the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Tuen Mun Public Riding School.

'Horses have their own personality, emotions, likes and dislikes. For me, horses are my partners and are an inseparable part of my life,' he said.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club operates three public riding schools at Tuen Mun, Pokfulam and Lei Yue Mun Park.

'Since the Hong Kong Jockey Club started building public riding schools, horse riding has become more popular in Hong Kong,' Mr Chan said.

The three schools offer a wide range of courses and activities that give people of all ages the opportunity to learn more about horse riding, horse care and equestrian sports. The schools are recognised and approved by The British Horse Society in Hong Kong and there are strict annual assessments.

The society inspects the schools to check their standard of instruction, safety and horse care. The schools hold annual British Horse Society exams up to Stage III.
