The penalty was imposed by Mr Justice Ryan on Law Chi-ming, 26, after a jury unanimously found him guilty on one count each of robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

The judge, while accepting Law did not carry the gun, which was held by his accomplice, said he was nevertheless prepared to terrify bank staff.

Law denied both offences, and claimed his confession was fabricated by police who assaulted him and forced him to sign.

During the trial, the court heard evidence called by Senior Crown Counsel Josiah Lee that Law and another man entered the Chase Manhattan Bank in Wan Chai on December 13, 1990.

They approached different counters and each handed a similar note to the tellers, stating it was a robbery, that they had a gun and demanding $50,000.
