Macau students at mainland universities will pay less tuition fees from the new academic year beginning next month. They will be charged the same amount as their mainland counterparts.
This also applies to Hongkongers and Taiwanese studying on the mainland.
Mainland universities which charge higher tuition fees from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan students will be punished, according to a directive issued by the Ministry of Education earlier this year.
The new policy will help reduce Macau students' tuition fees by 30 to 50 per cent.
But they may still have to pay higher accommodation charges because they enjoy better facilities than their mainland counterparts.
As a result of the fee reduction, many mainland universities have received a record number of applications from students in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan this year.
Currently, more than 150 mainland universities, including 19 in Guangdong, are eligible to recruit students from the three places.
