Sanya Market
Xinjian Road, Sanya City
Sanya, on Hainan Island's southern tip, is known for reasonably priced fresh seafood caught in its clean waters. Now that a string of big-name hotels has moved in, the culinary variety around its sandy bays has widened. The streets surrounding the city's colourful Number One Market are dotted with small restaurants, where fresh seafood can be enjoyed far more cheaply than at the beach resorts. Here, a hearty seafood spread with drinks should cost no more than 100 yuan per head. The menus are interchangeable and the service is usually polite.
Dadonghai Bay
A step up in the comfort and selection stakes are the live-aquarium eateries that pepper the streets off the main seafront strip of Dadonghai, a hotel- and resort-lined bay 2km south of Sanya City. Like the market area, most establishments here are up to the same standard and prices are about half as much as those of city restaurants.
