Democratic Party lawmaker Albert Ho Chun-yan yesterday continued his hunger strike in support of human-rights lawyers on the mainland on the day that he had plastic surgery to his nose. Mr Ho, whose nose was broken and who had laser surgery to repair a detached retina after he was attacked by three baton-wielding men in a Central fast food restaurant on August 20, said he was in good condition. He said the surgery had gone very well and he was only feeling a little tired, partly due to the fasting. But he insisted doctors did not disapprove of his fasts, which he has staged for 24 hours every Wednesday for the past seven months in support of rights lawyers on the mainland. 'Actually, since 9pm last night I have not eaten anything and that is compatible with surgical procedures,' he said. 'I was given a glass of milk after surgery but I will not eat anything solid until tonight.' Mr Ho was discharged last night and went home to rest, but said he would be back at work today. 'The problems with the nose do not affect me very much, it was the eyes that were the main problem,' he said. 'I now have about 70 per cent of my vision back but because of the trauma, I have to let it recover gradually and naturally.' Police are still investigating the attack on Mr Ho in a McDonald's outlet in Queen's Road Central. Investigators believe it was linked to his work as a lawyer. Four days after he was attacked, a death threat and a cutter blade arrived at his law firm telling him to 'watch his step' and warning he would 'not be as lucky next time'. Mr Ho said he had yet to find out when he would have to travel to Macau to represent Winnie Ho Yuen-ki in a legal battle against her brother, casino mogul Stanley Ho Hung-sun. He said security arrangements had not yet been discussed regarding his visit. Police yesterday started visiting offices of legislators to study how to tighten security, with officers going to the district office of lawmaker Leung Yiu-chung in Kwai Chung. Police said they would provide better security for all legislators.
