Coming from the man behind Sex and the City and Entourage, it's no surprise that The Devil Wears Prada relies on a mixture of acerbic wit and glamour. Stripping the malice from Laura Weisberger's expose of the fashion industry and adding a stream of deadly epigrams, David Frankel unleashes a film that is at once a homage to New York's fashionistas, and a portrayal of them at their most obnoxious and cynical.
At the centre is Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep), an Anne Wintour-esque magazine editor who has made an art of being a withering, brutal boss, making ever more absurd demands of her underlings.
Struggling to cope is Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a journalism graduate who hopes her stint under the matriarch will be a stepping stone to a career at The New Yorker - but who finds herself increasingly attached to the glitter and gowns she used to frown on.
