Punters have taken the Douglas Whyte lead and plunged on his chosen mount, Wise Lover, in the final race today, with the weight of money crushing the gelding's price to a restricted $25 favourite on overnight markets. Whyte, who rode his first winner of the new term at the opening meeting last Sunday, has been the regular rider of Winning Bullet, Summerville Power and Wise Lover - all engaged in this event - and has chosen the latter from the yard of Alex Wong Yu-on. Whyte also rode one of tomorrow's main rivals, Calcando to victory last season, though he was never an option to ride the gelding this time around as Felix Coetzee has been his regular pilot in the mornings since coming off the retainer to Tony Cruz. Wise Lover began last season on a high note, storming to an upset victory on good-to-yielding ground at the opening meeting under the guidance of Howard Cheng Yue-tin. The Charnwood Forest gelding left the season the same way, this time partnered by Whyte when he ran out the easiest of winners over 1,400 metres in the final meeting of the term. Wise Lover has trialled and worked brilliantly in preparation for his return and convinced Whyte to stick with him, despite his strong connection to Winning Bullet and Summerville Power. In Whyte's absence, the mount on Winning Bullet has gone to Robbie Fradd, while trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai has opted for the seven-pound claim of top apprentice Alex Lai Hoi-wing. Whyte's other high-profile mount for the day is Supreme Gains, the $28 early favourite for the ninth event, the Kwangtung Cup. The promising galloper looked a rising star last season and trainer Manfred Man Ka-leung has given him a thorough preparation, including two barrier trials.
