The Hong Kong Basketball Association is seeking an explanation for why the SAR team have been placed outside the top eight seeds for the Asian Games tournament.

Instead of being seeded in the main round-robin stage, Hong Kong must first now go through a three-team group from which only one team will advance to join the top eight seeds.

Hong Kong have been placed in qualifying group C where they will meet Syria and Afghanistan.

'We were totally in the dark about the way Fiba-Asia made the draw,' said Raymond Leung Wai-man, development director of the Hong Kong Basketball Association. 'We were never informed about this change and have no idea of the rationale behind it. Hong Kong finished eighth at the last Asian Games and if there are eight seeded teams for the second round, we should be one of them.'
