Parents and educators are mourning the death of a leading advocate of parent education in Hong Kong.

Leung Chung-wan, 56, who was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star last year for his contribution to parent education and youth development, died in a car crash on Island Road in Aberdeen last Friday.

Leung was founder of the Eastern District Parent-Teacher Association in 1996 and the Hong Kong Parents' Association two years ago. The latter consists of a group of parent representatives previously working in district parent groups. The association carries out research and runs seminars.

Leung was also vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Youth Development Council. He had been a secondary teacher and ran a study tour business in recent years.

In last week's Education Post he called for action to stop people with criminal records from working in schools.

Lai Tsang-hing, who is to replace Leung as chairman of the Hong Kong Parents' Association until December, said members of the group were very sad about Leung's death. 'He was a gentleman who had a passion and vision for education,' he said.
